# SSL Renegotiation Indication Extension

The SSL Renegotiation Indication Extension - RNI - is an improvement on [SSL](/glossary/s/ssl) and [TLS](/glossary/t/tls) aimed to prevent unauthorized connections where a service wrongly identifies an injected connection as belonging to a previously authorized client. 

RNI achieves this by encrypting the [TLS](/glossary/t/tls) renegotiation so it is specific to the client.
