# Private Key

A private key is part of a cryptographic system for
[authentication](/glossary/a/authentication) and [encryption](/glossary/e/encryption) using a private and public key.

The **private key** is kept secret and secure, and can be used to decrypt messages encrypted with the [public key](/glossary/p/public_key).
