# Public Key

A public key is part of a cryptographic system for
[authentication](/glossary/a/authentication) and [encryption](/glossary/e/encryption) using a private and public key.

The **public key** that can be distributed freely, and can be used to verify that a message has been sent by the owner of the [private key](/glossary/p/private_key).
