# Zone File 

A zone file is a text file that describes a [DNS](/glossary/d/dns) zone - a subset of the hierarchical domain name structure of the DNS. 

The zone file contains [Resource Records](/glossary/r/resource_record) describing domain names, IP addresses and other resources.
